Right next to the Silas Bronson Library on Grand Street, a little slice of nature is struggling on. Library Park has undoubtedly seen better days: while the stately gazebo in the northwest corner has weathered nicely, many areas are falling into disrepair.
Footpaths are cracked and uneven, posing a potential hazard for the elderly and disabled. The grass is occasionally sparse, with scattered fast-food bags and other trash blowing across the field.
Bits and pieces of a portable stage are strewn about the area, left over from the previous week’s performance, yet to be carried away.
Benches, paint peeling from their sides, are beginning to fall apart.
A utility pole, wires spilling from an open fuse-box, is left unattended, next to piled construction materials.
If the park is to continue to serve as a relaxing sanctuary for Waterbury residents, serious renovations and repairs are needed. It is not beyond saving, but it unquestionably needs help.
